Snoring is a loud, hoarse, or harsh breathing
sound that happens while you are sleeping.
Causes, incidence & risk
factors
In most people
the reason for snoring is not known. However, the following are known
causes of snoring:
- Sleep apnea
- Use of sleeping pills, antihistamines or alcohol at bedtime
- Nasal congestion from colds or allergies
- Enlarged tonsils or adenoids
- Being overweight, which leads to excessive neck
tissue that puts pressure on the airway
- Last months of pregnancy

Treatment
Treatment options include:
- Weight loss
- Avoidance of alcohol
- Use of a nasal spray or dilator strips
- Dental appliances that prevent the tongue from falling backwards
- Surgery
- Use of a CPAP mask ( a device you wear over
the nose while sleeping, when sleep apnea is the underlying cause)
