Snoring

Definition
Snoring is a loud, hoarse, or harsh breathing sound that happens while you are sleeping.

Causes, incidence & risk factors
In most people the reason for snoring is not known. However, the following are known causes of snoring:

  • Sleep apnea
  • Use of sleeping pills, antihistamines or alcohol at bedtime
  • Nasal congestion from colds or allergies
  • Enlarged tonsils or adenoids
  • Being overweight, which leads to excessive neck tissue that puts pressure on the airway
  • Last months of pregnancy

Treatment
Treatment options include:

  • Weight loss
  • Avoidance of alcohol
  • Use of a nasal spray or dilator strips
  • Dental appliances that prevent the tongue from falling backwards
  • Surgery
  • Use of a CPAP mask ( a device you wear over the nose while sleeping, when sleep apnea is the underlying cause)
